Wolsky András kiállítása

(Merlin Színház, Budapest, 1997. február 14-21.)

Wolsky András 30 darab A/4-es, piros, ceruzával és tussal készült geometrikus rajzot állított ki. A rajzok szorosan összefüggnek, sorozatuk szikár, átgondolt, tökéletes.

Értelmezzük a látható tényeket: harminc lap, mindegyiken dátum, egymást követô napok dátuma (az elsô lap 1996. november 15-én kelt): összesen egy hónap. A papírokat széltôl-szélig különbözôképpen elforgatott, azonos léptékû raszter fedi. Rajtuk vonalzó mellett húzott, hosszabb-rövidebb páros fekete vonal: minden vonal apró, sarkos formával indul és ugyanott végzôdik, oda-vissza futása közben kisebb-nagyobb szigeteket alkot. Naponta másféle vonal: útvonal. Visszatérés a kiinduláshoz: hazaérkezés. Az utolsó lapok egyik-másikán kis körök: otthon maradás. Éppen a középsô lapon: egyirányú zegzugos vonal.

Nagy festôk is írtak naplót. A grafologikus önvizsgálat dilemmája: naponta változik a kedélyem, hogyan írom le a nevemet spontán? milyen festômozdulat jön belôlem?

A személyesen túlira koncentrál, hangulatait zabolázza. A szabadság “a mozdulatlanság asszimetriáiból létrejövô mozgás”, írja munkájának fejlôdésvonalát magyarázó diplomadolgozatában. És amikor arról beszél, hogy a hagyományos kép téglalap alapjának arányaival játszva házfalakként vagy tájként is értelmezhetô formákat nyer: “a tagolatlan fehér fal, a zárt helység fala egyenlô a nyitottsággal, a határtalansággal”. Wolsky 30 darab novemberi-decemberi “útvonalrajza” az adott, a szükségszerû irányítottként való felfogásának és megélésének példázata, a város réseiben mozgó élet bizodalmának, szabadságának és végtelenjének lenyomata.

Dóra Maurer: Untitled

Exhibition of András Wolsky

(Merlin Theatre, Budapest, 14-21 February 1997)

András Wolsky exhibited 30 pieces of A/4 dimensions, geometric drawings made with red pencil and ink. The drawings are tightly interconnected; their series is lean, thought-out, perfect.

Let us interpret the visible facts: thirty sheets, a date on each, the dates of days following one after the other (the first sheet from 15 November 1996): one month in total. The papers are covered from edge to edge with a raster rotated in different directions, all of identical scale. On them are longer and shorter pairs of black lines, drawn along a ruler: each line begins with a small, angular form and ends at exactly the same point, creating smaller or larger islands in the course of its running back and forth. A different line each day: trajectory. Return to the starting point: returning home. On the last pages, occasionally small circles: staying at home. On the sheet exactly at the middle: a one-way zigzag line. Could he have known before the fact that the starting point would be changed exactly halfway through? (Change of address.) It is a diary before us, the trace of daily bustle and big change on the map of the city. Expressed without more precise data, but exclusively with traced forms.

The site of the exhibition is the lobby of a theatre. Fitting, if we approach András Wolsky’s work via the concepts of antique music and theatre, and speak about imitation (repetition, copying, delusion) and creation (artistic composition, theatrical interpretation). The diary is the (sincere?) writing down of the events of that day. The motive and the aim is consciousness, memory, preservation: mental imagery on the path of repetition. Great painters also wrote diaries. Delacroix offered his contemporaries his professional and sociological contemplations spiced with original observations. In the letters of Van Gogh, and in the narratives of Gauguin, the artists reflected upon the events of the day. Purely visual diary forms appeared in art after 1945, in the spheres of surrealism, informel and concept art, where imitation and creation truly became intertwined. The graphological dilemma of self-introspection: when my temperament changes daily, how can I write my name spontaneously? What painterly gesture comes from within me? Psychic-maps: the transposition of the event into colours and symbols. At the other end of the spectrum, Roman Opalka’s number sequence, lasting until his passing, as the plan, content and trace of his daily activity, or On Kawara’s daily gift of the sign of life. S/he who meditates generates impersonal evidence of existence, submitting her/himself to the order of law produced by her/himself.

Rules of the game: the restriction drawn according to the analogy of regularity, the unknown prying according to familiar parametres up one’s sleeve… During the game: consequentiality with self-restraint. András Wolsky does not work with “retinal” or subjective structures either, setting up game rules – but he adjusts these to phases of life. In spite of this, it is not self-observation, but “game research concerned with ideas” that interests him. He concentrates on that which is beyond the personal, bridling disposition. Freedom “is the movement originating in the asymmetry of motionlessness”, he writes in his diploma dissertation, explaining the line of development of his work. And when he speaks about playing with the proportions of the rectangular form of the traditional picture to obtain forms that can be interpreted as the walls of a house or a landscape: “the unarticulated white wall, the wall of a closed space is equivalent to openness, to boundlessness”. Wolsky’s 30 pieces of his November-December “route-drawing” are the parable of conceiving and experiencing the given, the necessary as what is guided, the imprint of the confidence, freedom and infinity of life in motion in the apertures of the city.
