István Hajdu : The Geometry of Loneliness

Exhibition of András Wolsky in the Vadnai Gallery

The geometric paintings of András Wolsky refer to both the classic avant-garde of the 20s and 30s and the conceptually based systematic painting of the 70s stemming from it. Just like these, Wolsky’s works also depict clear, logical structures by using movements defined by permutation, aleatory, and controlled accidents or secondary determination. These movements or rather their source, i.e. the process called controlled accident records the results of a proto-conceptual gesture as Wolsky uses a dice to determine the structure of most of his paintings. (Mallarmé would smile seeing them.)

He creates extremely rich and varied structures by revolving, shifting planes virtually or dividing the surface of the paintings and changing the rhythm of the segments gained in this way, using both the pure primary colours of the additive and subtracting colour blending as well as their „mutants”.

So far this review sounds like an entry in an encyclopaedia (and it might become one sometime) but it must be filled with vitality so as not to become rigid and sad simply because András Wolsky’s paintings are too good to be classified as the last branch of washed-out collectivism. Appearances are deceptive: judging by his exhibition – which could be interpreted as a journal of his development – he seemed to have written the combined and accelerated obituary of geometric abstraction (mainly of the Hungarian school) since his debut in the mid 90s. In the structures of his paintings several of Dóra Mauer’s, Péter Türk’s or István Nádler’s gestures from the 60s, 70s and 80s can be detected.

However, Wolsky must be interpreted in a broader context. His early works are characterised by the gnosis and social utopia of Mondrian’s universalism as well as the conceptually alienated automythology of controlled accidents. The dice thrown for Christ’s cloak lands (as mentioned before) right in front of Mallarmé. The great and sublime communal ideas of the Eastern and Western avant-garde become mixed with the under-elevated conceptual and detached diary-keeping in Wolsky’s works. The idea narrows down but the space grows wider, convention and doctrinairism is blown away in the wind of art historical freedom. Wolsky seems to have realised that clear formalism (Mondrian) had irrevocably been defeated by narrativity by the year 2000.

But what is left then and what are the leftovers good for? Salon constructivism, living-room neo-plasticism and philosophising post-conceptual gnosticism are not lifethreatening but they do not have to do anything with life either. To be honest, contemporary art in general has nothing to do with life at all. But it is not them that Wolsky chooses. He starts to dramatise his function (somewhat under influence again or at least with the help of Nádler as a filter) and dissolves the monochromatic stripes.

In his most recent works he maps out Soulages-style, Nádler-style, patched and sensitised stripes and narrow planes in endless spaces, which show not only ideas but experience in painting as well. They do not simply express ideas but emotions behind the ideas, and they behave as traces or prints of movements or allow themselves to be interpreted like that. One of the elements of Wolsky’s constructions is an accidental map of routes. In his paintings routes done within a certain time are recorded, or places visited by the painter are connected to form a composition. The planes constructed in his latest works are themselves prints, their surface is frayed or rich, textured and factured, they conflict with the geometric principle – they are the prints of passion. Due  to their duality even some musical layering can be detected though I am not sure whether it is deliberate or accidental.

However, the real question is whether the pace of completing this relatively short, 7-8 year phase is not too fast. It seems that gradually he may end up painting white on white. It is not only because his recent paintings are closer to black and white monochrome than his earlier, industrial, composite colours but also because the surface of the frayed prints – the patches of paint made by brush or roll – reveals the temptation of giving up colours as a whole. But monochromatic white means a completely different freedom, lacking narrativity, whose gentle boredom is contained in the showcases of millions of museums.
